Edit Board Information Update and Bug Fixes
February 15th, 2007 by MelissaYou may have noticed that the Edit Board Info page in the Admin Center looks a little different. The tool was updated today in order to fix the Board Info bugs, make the pages more secure, and update the code and technology that the tool is built on.
The updated Edit Board Info tool looks and functions very much like the old page. However, these small changes were made:
- We simplified the processes of adding and attachment and the HTML code to encrypt an admin’s email address as an image.
- We added a “Reset to default Board Information” link. Clicking this link restores the original default board information page code if the admin desires.
- We created a new Board Information FAQ page to help answer basic questions board admins may have about the page and how to customize it. You can access the FAQ page by clicking on the grey question mark button in the upper-right of the Edit Board Info tool.
- For security and privacy reasons, we eliminated the ability to add new script tags to Board Information pages (existing tags will continue to work until the next time the page is updated). Please see the Board Information FAQ for more details.
We recommend that board admins take some time to review the new Board Information FAQ page for details on these small changes and how to use the Edit Board Info tool most effectively. We don’t anticipate problems, but if you do run across something that appears to be broken, please report it via the “Send Feedback” link or to the RootsWeb Helpdesk.

Because of the above, my Board Info pages WILL NOT be updated.

Melissa — it is great that the bugs are being worked on. I am finding, though, that when I choose to do my admin work I get all nature of error messages… including something about exceeding licencing limits… continual refusal that I am already logged in, etc.
Would it be in anyway possible to post in an Admin only area some sort of schedule of when the boards are actively being worked on by the engineers? It may clue us to when we are better off avoiding attempt to do admin duties and reduce wasted time and frustration.
I look forward to the time to do admin work speeding up as it once was.
Thanks!

I’ve been very pleased with the new Boards, but I fail to see the importance of having fancy html laden Board Information pages. Just put the contact information for the admin and leave it at that. This was one of three features held over from the previous system I wished Ancestry would have done away with. The other two are the Classifciations and the Surname Box.
Other than that, I really love the new board look. Its still way better than the old clunky system. Its going to take some time for people to get used to a new way of doing things.

[...] The message board team has continued to work on developing adjustments to the message boards and fixing outstanding bugs. For instance last week, the Edit Board Info board administration tool was updated and several related bugs were fixed. There have also been two other adjustments that launched within the last week. If they ever do away with any of those 3 features, this is one user & admin who will say Goodbye forever to RootsWeb. Classifications and Surnames (global indexing) sets these boards far and away ahead of every other board system on the net.
The surnames entries are VITAL for surnames which are also given names (George), common words (Street) as well as many others. Rick B. must have a ton of time on his hands to slog through simple searches.
